Just thinking…

When did you last experience wonder? One definition of wonder comes from 18th-century Scottish moral philosopher Adam Smith. He wrote that wonder arises ‘when something quite new and singular is presented… [and] memory cannot, from all its stores, cast up any image that nearly resembles this strange appearance’. Smith proposed that wonder is crucial for science since it inspires us to want to know more. It should also be part of the warp and woof of a life lived in and for Jesus. We can shake our heads in despairing wonder about the things in life that drag people down, and that's sometimes legitimate. But let's not forget to then look at Jesus with eyes that take in things you haven't before seen. Explore those questions about Him that don't have neatly packaged answers and when you've reached the point where your intellect falters, be in awe of how far you still are from understanding Him. Extrapolate the beauty of a waterfall; multiply the size of the universe; deep dive into the teeming life in a drop of water, and then with wide eyes, turn to God, their Maker and say, 'How Great you are!" Reclaim your birthright as a child of God to be amazed by him. He is truly Wonder-ful.
