Just thinking…

This Sunday has been set aside as Carey College Day, where we give focus to the work of our Baptist theological training college – Carey College. This college was started in 1926 and since then has had a long track-record of equipping people to serve Jesus in a variety of settings, both locally and overseas. Carey’s understanding of its identity and purpose serves as a useful reminder to all Jesus-followers, and I have adapted it below to apply to all of us:

Jesus is our focus. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Saviour of the world. We want followers of Jesus to grow in their love for him, their faith in him, their hope in him, and to participate more fully in his life and ministry.

The Bible is our basis. Jesus-followers are marked by a deep regard for Scripture. We believe it is the inspired Word of God in which we encounter Jesus, and through which the Spirit breathes life into his church and world.

The gospel is our message. Jesus-followers are gripped by the good news of God’s kingdom. We long to see it transforming people and places throughout Aotearoa, and beyond.

The church is our community. Jesus-followers value the dynamic of deep connection with other Christians in local communities of faith.

Mission is our calling. Jesus-followers long to see Christian communities engaging effectively in the mission of God and to participate in sharing his good news in word and life.

Do the above ‘markers’ describe us? Do they describe you? Take a moment to reflect on these with the Lord and then, perhaps choose one aspect that you can take a little further in your own life.

In Him,
Murray
