Just thinking…
Who is the wisest person you know? When I ask that question, your mind will probably reach out for a certain set of criteria; these criteria may or may not include intelligence or academic learning, but chances are that even if they make it onto your list, they won’t be the most important thing. Wisdom is more grounded, isn’t it? It has to do with the ability to navigate life well, and because of that, wisdom is a very pragmatic thing. The wise people we turn to when we are in need are those people who can help us figure out what to do in the face of certain challenges. We fervently hope in times of crisis that our leaders will show wisdom – this is not a hope that they will get more university degrees, but that they will make the right decisions to bring the most benefit to the people they lead. We will be beginning this Sunday a new message series on the book of Job, and this book is one of a small handful of writings in the Bible which are called ‘Wisdom Writings’. Wisdom writings are those that may at times be very cerebral (when I was younger, I used to call these kind of chats ‘D&Ms’ – ‘deep and meaningfuls’!), but the purpose of these musings are very ordinary and down-to-earth. Their point is to answer the question, ‘How do I live the best possible life?’ ‘How do I navigate well through a world where things can go wrong as much as they can go right?’ And it just may be that now is a good time to get God’s wisdom on these questions – come along for the adventure!
